Pregnant with Quadruplets Part 1

The story of our quadruplets all started on a saturday in May of 2010. Sam and I had just gotten married the month before, and after spending 5 days in Thailand for our honeymoon it was back to the U.S. and back to our normal life. Even before getting married, we knew that we wanted to have kids. We discussed on many occasions that the optimal number of kids for us would be 3. Although we knew that we wanted to have kids, we were in no hurry to get pregnant. We had heard from other friends that it usually took them about 3 to 6 months of trying to conceive, so we decided to just let it happen. We figure that if Sam gets pregnant in 3 to 6 months that would be perfect, but things didn't go as we had thought. In May of 2010, Sam missed her period, so we picked up a home pregnancy test to see if it had actually happened. I still remember that Saturday morning as I was getting ready to go to work, Sam took the test, two lines. Both sam and I were excited, we never thought that it would happen so quickly, but it did. I still went to work, but it was hard to concentrate on work as the only thing that was on my mind was that Sam was pregnant.

After getting home that night, we started looking for a doctor so that Sam could get an ultrasound and start the pregnancy examinations, we were a bit eager with the excitement of having a baby. Since we were both working at the time, Sam scheduled her first ultrasound but I had to work, so I did not go with her. The first ultrasound didn't go so well. The doctor told Sam during the ultrasound that she was not able to locate the embryo, and advised Sam that it could be an ectopic pregnancy. In order to confirm the pregnancy the doctor did a blood pregnancy test. The test consisted of measuring the level of human chorionic gonadotropin or hCG in Sam's blood, Sam was indeed pregnant because Sam's hCG levels were between 5 mIU/ml to 25 mIU/ml. Sam needed to do a follow up test again to confirm the hCG level in Sam's blood just to make sure that the first time was not a false positive. I remember taking Sam to get the blood test at Sequoia Hospital and the process was quick and the results were sent to our doctor. We had also scheduled a 2nd ultrasound with the doctor and also to discuss the results of the blood test.

The next day, after our doctor had a chance to review the blood test results, she contacted Sam via phone and advised Sam that she was concerned because the blood test was confirmation that Sam was indeed pregnant and that ectopic pregnancies if not terminated soon could result in rupture and sever blood loss. Since we had our second ultrasound coming up soon, the doctor suggested that she schedule an abortion during our second visit. What were we to do? We were still feeling the excitement that we were about to become parents for the very first time just a week earlier and now we need to face abortion. Neither of us really fully understood the dangers of an ectopic pregnancy at the time, and we decided that we would not schedule the abortion just yet. We wanted to have a 2nd ultrasound to see if the doctor could locate the embryo before deciding to terminate.

四千金的故事要從2010年5月的一個星期六開始說起。一直以來我和Sam都有在討論關於生小孩的事情，討論的結果是要想生3個。當初還想看能不能五年生三個。這樣小孩子的年齡不會差很多。而我們在台灣結婚後也都去做了身體檢查。一切OK。4月10號剛結婚，結完婚後去了泰國度蜜月，不到月底我們回到美國恢復了我們的正常的生活。當時有和周邊的一些朋友討論過，聽說要懷孕並不是那麼簡單的。很多人都說要好幾個月才會懷孕。至少3到6個月。而且要算好日子，因為女生可以受孕就那麼幾天而已。後來Sam和我決定就順其自然吧，不用太刻意，會就會，不會就慢慢來。還記得那是一個星期六早上，我正準備去上班，Sam 跑過來跟我說，兩條線。當時很興奮，但是因為要上班所以沒有機會跟Sam好好談。

那天下班後回到家裡就開始和Sam找醫生。雖然有點早，但是很想馬上就安排去照超音波。因為我們兩個都還要上班，所以Sam自己安排了去照超音波。第一次超音波並沒有很順利，因為醫生當時找不到embryo。當時醫生擔心是子宮外孕。為了確認Sam是不是懷孕了，醫生幫Sam安排了Blood pregnancy Test 血妊娠試驗。
